Frequently asked questions

At what stage of fermentation should these CO2 Bulbs be used, how often and what types of home brew to use them with. I brew beer, lager and cider?
The CO2 bulbs are a quick substitute to the natural CO2 that builds up during secondary fermentation which takes place in the pressure barrel. They are usually used when the pressure barrel is around half empty as it takes much longer for the natural CO2 to build up, so its easy to put a bulb in and have instant pressure. It can really vary but two or maybe three will sometimes be needed for one brew.
You can use them with any home brew that needs pressurising in your barrel.

Home Brew Online Flagon - 4 Pint With Pressure Cap
Home Brew Online Flagon - 4 Pint With Pressure Cap

A very handy 4 Pint (2.4 Litres) Flagon. Great for drawing some beer, lager or cider from your barrel, either to chill in the fridge or to take round to your friends for sampling.

This 4 Pint flagon, aka carry keg, is made from food grade PET plastic with a pressure cap to prevent over pressurising. Can be used for secondary fermentation but will only achieve a light carbonation, so more suitable for light  carbonated ales, stouts etc. Plus you would need to drink the 4 pints with in a couple of days of opening (not a problem for some) as it would soon go flat. So we would recommend just using for dispensing and transporting in most cases.

Base of the flagon is 6.5 inches & height is 8 inches.

Please Note - DO NOT use hot or boiling water with this product

Complete barrel with top tap and float, brass valve cap and carry handles

Barrel holds up to 40 pints / 23 Litres

The King Keg Top Tap Barrel is built to high standards from prime grade, abrasion resistant material.

The top tap enables storage on the floor with access to the tap still possible. The Easy-Serve float system connected to the tap enables clear beer to be drawn from near the surface as the pressure inside the barrel delivers the beer.

The brass valve in the cap of the Top Tap King Keg is the pin style valve which allows for extra gas to be added from disposable CO2 Bulbs if required and doubles as a relief valve to vent any excess pressure. The King Keg features twin sturdy handles for easy handling.

(Please note King Kegs do not include bulb holders to inject CO2 bulbs but we have them available separately if needed)

The barrel features a wide neck for easy cleaning and stands 45cm high.

3Jury is out

I have slightly modified the keg prior to 1st use as having purchased the top-tap version I then read of issues with the top 4" seal and the internal float sitting too high. Before using I've installed an alternative square-section top seal and half filled the float with star-san sterilised water (it was either that or vodka, IMO). I may have given more stars, but have a personal dislike of the amount of head produced - many people like beer with a good head; I like flat beer with little or no head & normally halve the amount of priming sugar, but didn't with this keg, as it needs the CO2 release to force the beer out of the tap. The gushing under pressure inevitably provides half a pint of head (but does provide flat beer :-)) - this may be due to storage conditions, due to the shape it is very difficult to cool/chill (I like beer at an ambient temperature rather than chilled/cold, I understand this in itself can lead to CO2 release) unless you have a dedicated fridge! Now 3/4 of the way down the keg & all seems ok. Not needed to inject any CO2 & generally no other problems, although the beer does not taste as fresh - but it is 3-week since I first began to tap & not chilled
