Lovely refreshing, summerish taste

Brew with standard brewing sugar, fermentation took about 8 days in 22-23 degrees. The finished drink came out a little bit sour, more like apple cider, but it could be me. Not a problem though.

Decent piece of beer

Easy to brew, bit too bitter to my taste though. In my case fermentation took only 4 days as opposed to 7+ in the instructions.

Differing Results

I have brewed this kit twice and on both occasions used Muntons beer kit enhancer instead of sugar. I am currently working in Norway and the winters are cold even in the south west. My first attempt was not impressive while I could drink it, it really did not resemble a good Pilsner; this was brewed and matured during the summer months so fermentation and maturation temp would have been in the low 20’s. With my second attempt I took a slightly different approach; Once fermentation had started I let the fermented continue in an unheated spare bedroom and let it brew at a much lower temp, probably in the region of 12-14 Deg C. I checked with the manufacturers before doing this and they said that the yeast might stall as it is not true pilsner yeast that is provided. The brew fermented just fine at this temp, but it did take several weeks to get it to the right gravity. When finished I siphoned it into another bucket and let it rest for 3 weeks and finally after this I put half in a Keg and rest in bottles to mature. My second attempt, brewed and matured in the cold was really impressive and so much better than the first feeble attempt. I can only conclude that this was down to the cooler brewing and maturation temperatures. Well worth giving a go!

Good flavour

Fermentation took about 10 days (even the warmest place in my house dips below 20C for large parts of the day). Used slightly more sugar than the recipe said and achieved a 5% ABV brew. Nice fizz to the lager and quite a bitter finish, which makes it more like an ale (not a bad thing, IMHO).
